Bill Nye, known as the “science guy”, has revealed that a killer asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs 66 million years ago could hit the Earth again.

The popular American science communicator made this announcement while talking at the International Academy of Astronautics’2019 Planetary Defense Conference in College Park, Maryland on May 2, 2019.

“The Earth is going to get hit with another big asteroid,” Nye said. “The problem is, we don’t know when,” he added. “It’s a very low probability in anyone’s lifetime, but it’s a very high-consequence event. If it happens, it would be like control-alt-delete for everything.”

We don’t know when a giant rock might impact the Earth, but we still have to be prepared.

Nye said humans have to do something to combat the devastating impact the dangerous asteroid could have on Earth.

As per Nye, the first step to protect the planet is by finding dangerous space rocks that might be lurking in the solar system. NASA has already discovered more than 90 percent of potentially dangerous asteroids. These near-Earth asteroids are at least 0.6 miles (1 kilometers) wide. But fortunately, none of them can be considered a serious threat to our civilization.

However, there are lots of undiscovered asteroids zooming through near-Earth space that could do serious damage on a local scale. They have the tendency to wipe out an area of a whole state. Nye also urged space agencies to develop better detection tools to spot dangerous asteroids.

In the meantime, NASA is now busy developing a planetary defense weapon to protect the earth from an asteroid hit in the future.
